Wakanda’s marketplace requested by @forgetfulmarron
I love that they put so much detail into this. It’s clear that Wakanda consumes things from the outside world. They still wear clothing inspired by Dutch wax print cloth. Dancing Dude is holding up a drum that I think derives from Asian countries – I’ve seen it in Japan as “den den daiko,” but I know other countries have something similar. He’s got dreds, which are (I thought) West African in origin, whereas Wakandan people must be from somewhere near South Africa (thousands of miles away) given that they speak isiXhosa. But Wakanda isn’t South Africa – and there’s a woman in a dress in the third gif whose patterns remind me of (also South African) Ndebele house paint designs. Same thing on the houses. And one of the two running children has straightened hair.
But despite the outside influences, they still very much do their own thing. Notice Tattoo Person in front of Dancing Dude! Nice to know Wakandans use their glow-in-the-dark tattoo ink for more than the lip marks. Everybody’s wearing kimoyo beads – I know they’re tech, but even though they’re as ubiquitous for Wakandans as cellphones are for us, theirs look good, and don’t distract them from the beauty of life around them. And at Wakandan food stands, you don’t have to ask for the pepper, damn it.
So much worldbuilding packed into such a quick scene.
The intricate detail of folk dress shall always capture my heart. Those tassels, that embroidery- I can’t stop drawing it.
