Besides the Aesthetic™? Maybe like, you know how blind prophets and storytellers are a thing? I’ve always thought of it like that

I HAVE SOME ANSWERS FOR THIS
as far as I can tell the trend in art started with the incredible IridiumDepot on Twitter, and then the official artist for campaign 1, Kit Buss, riffed off the idea in a semi-official design
Blind prophets are indeed a thing, most significantly Tiresias in Greek myth. Usually the prophets are blind because they have undergone a symbolic exchange of sight – sacrificing regular vision for the ability to see the future. In courtrooms, anthropomorphized statues of Justice are also depicted as women wearing blindfolds and holding scales, but in their case, it’s to represent the fairness of justice. “Justice is blind”, because it is not influenced by emotion or bias – only by facts.
Matt’s blindfolded DM is a conflation of both of those symbols! Not only is he able to ‘see the future’ in the sense that he has a larger perspective on the story of the campaign, but he is also expected to be impartial when he evaluates dice rolls, yielding his story to unbiased chance.
