A Song For A Story

ekjohnston:

Today is the day you tell the cute guy in math class that it’s October 3rd, which means it’s also a year since That Inevitable Victorian Thing came out. Let’s talk about The Log Driver’s Waltz.

My favourite thing about this song is how 100% centred the girl’s feelings are. Every part of it is her thoughts and her plans. She respects her parents’ wishes, but still follows her own wants, which is a tricky thing to learn.

And at the end, it’s “so when the drive’s over, if he asks me AGAIN”, which implies he already has and she said no. Which is great self-knowledge.

So kudos to Wade Hemsworth, for writing a song in the 1950s that we still sing, and to Jennifer Phelan for a beautiful 2018 version (that you can get, bc it’s out now!). Both have made an impact on me.🇨🇦
